Tips Vehicle Repair Shops don’t want you to Know

24-Sep-2012

In the industry of car repair there are many misnomers and questions regarding what clients are to do when they get into a car accident. Sad to say but many times the insurance companies and body shops don’t look out for the client’s best interests. Fear not though we’ve compiled a list of fundamental things customers can do to protect themselves.

Be Careful for the insurance’s “Preferred” Body Shop

These days, there are many insurance companies that try to push their customers towards their preferred body shop. Typically this is fine, but when the insurance company owns the “Preferred” Body shop it becomes an issue. At that point everything to these body shops and insurances becomes about cutting their cost and generating company value. Leony, owner of an Auto Repair Center, explains, “The insurance’s these day work side by side with body shops to derive the most value they can. It’s a huge conspiracy. It’s regrettable that customers are the ones losing out and they don’t even know it.”

Do you Due Diligence

Research and spend some time looking into your own body shop or finding a car crash consultant. A lack of understanding of the industry and the way things work leaves the customer at a disadvantage against the corporate giants. The best thing customers can do for themselves is follow good word of mouth from friends or family. Unlike the insurance and body shops, these people are unbiased towards the situation and in most cases will be looking out for your best interests.

Look over your estimate and ask for the supplement estimate from your insurance

On all estimates the insurance allots a certain amount of money for the labors hours and parts. This is your opportunity to shop around and see where you can get some value. For example, the adjuster’s estimate could allot 50 labor hours and give you $50 per hour for the repair. If you were able to find a body shop that could get the work done with 40 labors hours at a rate of $35 you could stand to save a decent chunk of change. Typically, after inspecting the vehicle’s damage, some extra repairs may be necessary to report to the insurance for compensation. Make sure to inquire with your body shop or insurance company to insure whatever they are getting you’re being compensated for as well.

Stay Away from Body Shops off Highways

We all know that the auto repair center off the highway might look nice and have great customer services reps but this doesn’t do anything for your vehicle. At the end of the day, the costs for all the window dressing and customer service reps will be priced into the auto body repair. All businesses’ are there to make money; you can be sure any operating cost they incur will be passed onto the consumer. Better yet, look for an auto body shop somewhere on the out skirts of a city. There are a million body shops out there that do good work and can save you money without paying a fortune.
